{An analysis of news and
responses to Carter’s visits with Arab Islamic jihad leaders of
Hamas}
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter of Habitat for Humanity fame said
Monday, April 21, his Hamas Islamic jihad friends will pay lip
service to Israel if Israel pulls back to 1967 borders.
Ending a 10-day Middle East tour that favored Israel’s sworn
enemies, Carter said talks of peace can not succeed without the
leaders of the declared jihad to destroy Israel.
Criticism of Carter’s appeasement approach abounded, and included
analysis of the philosophy of jihad and Islamic supremacy relevant
to all jihadist fronts, including the fifth-column of homegrown
Islamic jihad rising in America.
“We do not believe that peace is likely, and certainly that peace is
not sustainable, unless a way is found to bring Hamas into the
discussions in some way,” Carter, in defense of his efforts, said.
Hamas “said they would accept a Palestinian state on the 1967
borders, if approved by the Palestinians, and that they would accept
the right of Israel to live as a neighbor next door in peace,” he
added.
Carter’s published statements of accord did not indicate any
timeframe for how long Hamas and other jihad groups would observe
their moment of silence before resuming hostilities across the new
borders.
Rebuke against Carter included Israeli President Shimon Peres, who
according to published reports said the efforts would actually
damage the peace process by legitimizing Hamas and sidelining
genuine Muslim moderates.
Peres also reportedly noted Carter’s book, “Palestine, Peace, not
Apartheid” was an incorrect characterization of Israel as if an
apartheid regime.
Clifford May, president of Foundation for the Defense of
Democracies, said Carter might have been indulging in egotistical
grandstanding influenced by millions of dollars that Islamic leaders
in sympathy with the ideology of jihad have given to his Carter
Center.
May said Islamic jihad ideologues such as the leaders of Hamas are
never going to be swayed by the appeasement, any more than were the
ideologues of Hitler’s Third Reich or Stalin’s Communist bid for
world conquest.
“The ideology of Hamas derives from something more enduring than
Mein Kampf, Das Kapital and the sayings of Chairman Mao,” May said.
“It is rooted in a 1,400-year-old religion,” he added. “Hamas
proudly proclaims ‘the Koran is our constitution, jihad is our way,
and death for the sake of God is our highest aspiration.’”
May said the depth of Hamas’ tyrannical slant can not be breached by
political means as easily as more recent foes of freedom.
“Hamas leaders promise their followers not just rewards here on
earth, but in the next world as well – a selling point neither
Nazism nor Communism could offer,” he said.
Dianna West, a commentator affiliated with the Heritage Foundation,
a conservative think tank in Washington DC, said Hamas is nestled in
a network of Islamic jihad terror causes.
“The arch murderers of Hamas [is] the Iranian-sponsored, Muslim
Brotherhood-linked terror organization openly dedicated to the
annihilation of the state of Israel,” West said.
She added Carter’s choices degraded the office of the U.S.
Presidency and legitimized the cause to destroy Israel, driving its
Jewish population into the Mediterranean Sea.
“Jimmy Carter has made all the wrong choices,” she said.
Oliver North of Iran-Contra fame, as founder of Freedom Alliance,
noted Carter’s travels, while overshadowed in popular media circles
by the Pope’s visit to America, was closely watched by pro-Islamist
media in the Middle East.
“To note that this entire venture is an extraordinary propaganda
windfall for radical Islam is an understatement,” he said.
“Hamas, it should be noted, is listed by he U.S., Isreal and the
European Union a an international terrorist organization,” he added,
“pledged as recently as this week to ‘destroy the illegal Jewish
entity’ and ‘deliver Allah’s fire’ on ‘the occupiers.’”
North said he could not compare Carter’s actions on behalf of Hamas
with the good he’s done for Habitat for Humanity, a charitable
organization for providing houses to low-income families.
“It is hard to fathom what good Carter sought to achieve,” he said.
“By the time his trip concludes, Carter will have broken bread with
the sworn enemies of the United States and disparaged our only
democratic ally in the region.”
Conservative columnist Emmett Tyrrell shared that assessment. “A
failure as a president, Jimmy is appraised as a useful tool by our
enemies,” he said. “That he has been greeted by Hamas speaks volumes
about the public life of Jimmy Carter.”
May concluded Carter is a part, but not the cause, of why Islam’s
supremacist ideology and use of violent jihad is gaining ground.
“He alone is not responsible for the rise of Islamism in all its
malevolent variations,” May said. “He is responsible, however, for
so profoundly misunderstanding what is happening in the world over
so many years.” And …
So are all too many political leaders of the U.S., across America
and throughout Western civilization, sacrificing our greatest ideals
handily to appease the arch enemies of freedom.
