Al-Qaeda Operative Planned Attack on New York Targets

Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist that belonged to Al-Qaeda, was found with notes about a “mass casualty attack” on targets in New York such as the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, Plum Island Animal Disease Center and Wall Street, according to The Times and various other reports. Siddiqui was educated in the United States and is the only known woman to be involved in the highest levels of Al-Qaeda.

Siddiqui was originally captured in Afghanistan with notes on chemical, biological, and radiological weapons; downing airborne drones; and the use of underwater explosives and gliders for terrorist attacks. She also had various chemicals in her possession and a flash drive with information on terrorist cells.

She is accused of trying to kill her American interrogators after wresting a rifle from one of them. She was subdued after being shot once. Siddiqui has plead innocent to the charges of assault and attempted murder.

Siqqiui disappeared from Pakistan in 2003, causing some to suspect that she was secretly taken into custody by Pakistani authorities on behalf of the United States. The U.S. denied having her in custody until this year. Her family claims she was kidnapped in 2003 by the U.S. and was tortured while in detention. If she is convicted she faces up to 20 years in prison for each charge.
