Terrorists Bomb Military Barracks in Italy

A Libyan man set off a briefcase bomb at a military barracks in Milan on October 12 after a guard stopped him from entering the complex, Associated Press reports. A spokesperson for the Italian military confirmed that the Libyan shouted something in Arabic as he launched the attack.

EuroNews reports that the attacker is in the hospital and has lost his hand due to the blast. The guard suffered only minor injuries.

Another Egyptian and Libyan were arrested after the attack on suspicion of having supporting roles, according to Adnkronos. The paper also reported that the police located over 100 kilograms of explosives at a house near the residence of the attacker.

Adnkronos reported that the attack was praised on radical Islamic websites.

"Well done, God will reward you," wrote one poster on a site linked to Al-Qaeda.

The AP reports that Italian law enforcement says there is no evidence that the attack was connected to a terrorist plot foiled in December by two Moroccans.

Italy currently has 2,800 soldiers in Afghanistan as part of an international effort to stabilize the country and prevent the Taliban from coming to power. The AP report says that a friend of the attacker said he had become angry recently over Italy's involvement in the conflict.
