FBI Has Shootout With Radical Imam in Detroit

imamABC News reports that the FBI has killed a radical Imam named Luqman Ameen Abdullah at a Detroit warehouse after a shootout ensued when they tried to arrest him on October 28. One of the dogs used by the FBI during the attempted arrest was killed by Abdullah's gunfire.

Abdullah, whose original name was Christopher Thomas, led a radical nationwide Sunni Muslim group called Masjid Al-Haqq that aimed to create an Islamic state inside the U.S. Eleven of his followers were indicated after the raid for engaging in criminal activity such as illegal shipments across states, illegally selling and owning guns, mail fraud and manipulation of Vehicle Identification Numbers. Various press outlets reported that the majority of Abdullah's followers converted to Islam while in prison and are almost entirely African-American.

"Abdullah encourages members of the Masjid Al-Haqq, many of whom are convicted felons, to carry a firearm, and information obtained during the course of this investigation indicates that many of Abdullah's followers are usually armed," says the FBI affidavit.

The document also states that Abdullah preached against the government and called for an "offensive jihad."

One of those arrested is Abdullah's oldest son, Mujahid Carswell, who was arrested in Ontario October 29, according to the Canwest News Service. Carswell is alleged to have been part of the "Sura team," a group of armed followers in charge of protecting Abdullah's mosque. He also trained about 60 youth in martial arts at the mosque. The FBI said that members of the group also have undergone firearms training.

The killing has caused protest by some in the Muslim community. The American-Muslim Task Force has called for an investigation, and hundreds of people attended Abdullah's funeral according to Detroit News.

"He would open up the mosque to homeless people. He used to run a soup kitchen and feed indigent people. ... I knew nothing of him that was related to any nefarious or criminal behavior," Dawud Walid, head of the Council on American-Islamic Relations' Michigan chapter told ABC News.
