FBI Director Says Somali Terrorists Could Attack Inside America

10189FBI Director Robert Mueller has warned the Senate Homeland Security Committee that al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist group in Somalia, wants to launch attacks outside of the country and could target the United States, FoxNews.com reported October 2.

The report stated that the president of Somalia's transitional government, which was overthrown by radical Islamic groups, says that up to 1,100 terrorists from abroad have joined al-Shabaab's forces and that training camps are operating in Somalia.

Al-Shabaab has successfully recruited Somali-Americans in Minnesota to join their ranks in Somalia. In October, one of these recruits, named Shirwa Ahmed, became the first American citizen to carry out a suicide bombing when he died in Somalia. The FBI is also looking into another suicide bombing in the East African country that may have been carried out by a Somali-American.

On October 14, Minnesota Public Radio reported that a federal grand jury has indicted another Somali-American for lying to the FBI about the purpose of a trip he and some others took across the country. Two of the individuals he was driving were seen at the Mexican-American border near San Diego.

The incidents have raised concerns that Americans who have joined al-Shabaab could be used to infiltrate the U.S. and carry out attacks. As many as 20 Somali-Americans in Minnesota have gone missing and are suspected of having secretly gone back to their homeland.

Many in the Somali-American community in Minnesota are outraged by al-Shabaab's recruiting efforts.

"In Minnesota, my peers who are Somali are against al-Shabaab. We really don't like what they do back home. Their ideology here doesn't fly, and [it's] going to die out," Minnesota Public Radio quoted Gandi Mohamed of Minneapolis as saying.
