British Mother Claims Daughter Victim of Honor Killing
The
mother of Tulay Goren, a girl who went missing ten years ago in
Britain when she was 15 years old, is claiming that her daughter is
the victim of a Muslim "honor killing" for having sexual relations
with a man twice as old as her, The Daily Mail
reports.
"'Tulay's father was outraged and was filled with a sense that his reputation and that of his family had been destroyed," said Jonathan Laidlaw, the prosecutor.
The Gorens came to Britain from Turkey in the 1980s. Tulay's boyfriend was also Turkish, but was from the Alevi sect of Islam, whereas the Gorens were Sunni.
Goren's mother, Hanim, told a court that her husband, Mehmet, and one of his brothers murdered Tulay and hid the body. Hanim's lawyer said that she initially lied to the police out of fear of retaliation by her husband and his family.
She claims that shortly before the alleged murder, Mehmet told one of their sons to give Tulay a kiss goodbye because it will be "the last time he would see her." After that last encounter, Hanim was told by her husband that Tulay had run away, and she noticed cuts on his hands and that two kitchen knives could not be found.
Hanim says that she was sent away from home by Mehmet, and when she returned, she noticed that the garden had been dug up, which she claims was due to Mehmet's digging up of Tulay's body and hide it elsewhere.
Tulay's father is also accused of trying to murder Tulay's boyfriend with an axe a week after the alleged removal of Tulay's burials from the garden. He was convicted for the assault in August 2000.
Hanim herself is accused of abusing Tulay as well. The Times Online reports that Hanim was accused in court of tying up Tulay and giving her sleeping pills to prevent her from seeing her older boyfriend. Hanim accuses her husband of the same crime.
