The Molly Norris Project--Preventing Islam from Shutting Down Free Speech
Journalism under siege : In 2006, a Dutch cartoonist, Kurt Westergaard, published a cartoon image of Mohammad that touched off riots, murders and embassy burnings around the world. After he was attacked in his own home by a crazed ax-wielding Islamist, his employer placed him on administrative leave for security reasons.
In April of 2010, several seminal events occurred in the Muslim's war to cow, subvert and ultimately shut down western journalists freedom to criticize Islam. An episode of the comedy cartoon show, South Park, attempted to continue the above story line but the depictions of Mohammad where covered by CENSORED messages and the Prophet s dialogue was bleeped. The show self-censored its episode in response to death threats. At least one was made publicly by a New York group, Revolution Muslim, which posted on its website that the South Park creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh. Also a Dutchman Van Gogh produced a play entitled Submission which focused on Islam's cruelty to women. He was murdered in the presence of fifty bystanders by a Moroccan immigrant to Holland who plunged into the playwright s chest a knife that was affixed with a note decrying crimes against Islam.
Later in 2010, a Seattle-based cartoonist for City Arts and Seattle Weekly magazines, Molly Norris also picked up the story line and offhandedly suggested to her Facebook followers that they participate in a Draw Mohammad Day. Tragically for Molly, her life would never be the same. Her initiative went viral over the Web, which triggered many death threats. Next, the American-born cleric, Anwar Al-Awlaki who was heading up an al Qaeda cell in Yemen , issued a fatwa against her along with eight other European cartoonists. Based on this and the volume of death threats, the FBI recommended that she go ghost. This meant that she was forced to leave her job, her family, her friends, simply because the FBI couldn't or perhaps wouldn't protect her even inside US borders. Karen Lugo of Chapman University who investigated the incident, made brilliantly clear the historic significance of Molly s plight, Norris is the first casualty in the campaign to Islamify America. And we let them take her down without a whimper.
Despite the fact that practically the entire American media chose to ignore the plight of Molly Norris, for journalists, her story should have been as big as it gets. For one thing, the story is about them. Molly represents the first American journalist forced into hiding inside the US by radicalized Muslims. But more importantly, her story means that that not only the freedom of the press but all our other freedoms, life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, can be put at risk by a relatively small band ruthless Muslims living in our midst. Small bands of ruthless thugs have, since before the dawn of history, always been successful in bringing to heel much larger populations of the docile. In just the twentieth century alone, small bands of thugs, the Bolsheviks and the Brown Shirts, took over Russia and Germany . While we the civilized look down our noses at the ruthless rable, we never stop to consider that ruthlessness is a tactic that works.
