Two-thirds of Republican voters in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday said they support Donald Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country.
Trump dominated the GOP field in the primary, more than doubling the support of his closest rival, with 35 percent of the vote. He has called for a temporary “complete shutdown” of Muslims entering the United States, something more than 65 percent of GOP New Hampshire voters told ABC News they support.
“Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine,” Trump said in a December statement, referring to the threat of Islamic terrorists. “Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life.”
Forty-two percent of those who told ABC News in exit polls Tuesday they support the temporary ban ended up voting for Trump in the primary. In addition to supporting the ban, 40 percent of GOP voters told ABC News illegal immigrants should be deported. Sixty percent said they are “very worried” about terrorism.
The foreign-born population of the United States is on track to hit 78 million in 2060, a record-breaking number seven times higher than the foreign-born population levels of 1970, according to Census Bureau data analyzed by the Senate subcommittee on immigration. In contrast to past immigration waves that were dominated by European immigrants, half of the modern immigration wave is from Latin America and one-quarter is from Asia and the Middle East.
