Christian Action Network
CAN is an organization that takes action. We’re not about talk. We’re not about TV programs. And we’re not about radio shows. We’re about ACTION.
Christian Action Network (CAN) was founded in 1990 by Martin Mawyer, who based the organization on biblical principles, values, traditions and truths. Mr. Mawyer's primary goal in establishing the Christian Action Network is to protect America's religious and moral heritage through intensive lobbying efforts — both in the nation's capital and at the grassroots level.

For several years CAN diligently pressured Congress to withdraw all funding for the National Endowment for the Arts — an agency that has used taxpayer dollars to fund thousands of artists, filmmakers, museums and writers who produce pornographic, anti-religious, and anti-Christian work. In October of 1996 CAN staged a "Funeral March" against the National Endowment for the Arts on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. During the demonstration, a black coffin filled with examples of NEA-funded art was carried up the Capitol steps, after which onlookers were invited to view for themselves how their tax dollars were being spent by the NEA. In the summer of 1997, CAN launched an ambitious cross-country tour of NEA projects, culminating in another demonstration outside the U.S. Capitol. This time, Capitol Police confiscated the "art" and issued a warrant for Mr. Mawyer's arrest for displaying "obscene" art — the same "art" that American taxpayers have been forced to fund for years. In 1998 Congress again failed to de-fund the NEA and CAN stepped up its lobbying efforts with a widely publicized demonstration outside NEA headquarters, and a national media campaign. |

CAN has been a leader in lobbying against same-sex marriage. Through a national campaign of education and lobbying, CAN was instrumental in getting Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) pushed through both houses of Congress in 1996. CAN is continuing to lobby against initiatives that could grant homosexuals the right to marry. CAN won a major court victory in the fall of 1996 when a lawsuit brought by the Federal Election Commission was deemed baseless by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals on August 2, 1996. The suit originated in 1992 when the Democratic National Committee filed a complaint saying that a 30-second TV commercial produced by CAN violated federal election laws. The commercial exposed then-candidate Bill Clinton's campaign promised to the gay community. The court upheld an earlier District Court ruling in which the FEC's case had been dismissed. The appeals court stated it found "no error in the thorough opinion of the [lower] court," handing CAN a major free-speech victory. CAN has worked to expose the true agenda of the radical homosexual lobby. CAN was instrumental in stopping a federal policy that would allowed homosexuals with AIDS the right to emigrate to the United States without restriction.

CAN has also lobbied against the Disney Corporation's sponsorship of pro-homosexual, anti-family projects, including its ABC-TV holding, film companies and publishing projects. In recent years Mr. Mawyer has gained national recognition for exposing Disney's annual "Gay Days" at Disney World. By going undercover during the annual event, Mr. Mawyer has revealed that the Disney-sponsored events include public lewdness and sex acts, and even open drug use at Disney World events attended by homosexual groups. |
