Teen with candy detonates, 2007 stats given

A suicide bombing serves as preamble for U.S. military reports on Islamic jihad loss statistics for 2007

Richard A. Oppel Jr. & Qais Mizher reported Monday, Jan. 21, on a teenager with a box of candy exploding among U.S. Sunni Muslim allies near Baghdad.

The teenage Issawi tribe member blew up fellow Issawi tribesmen - a betrayal orchestrated by al-Qaeda as an Islamic jihad attack in keeping with Shari’a, Qur’anic teaching that such violence cleanses Islam.

He strode in among fellow tribe members near Falluja and detonated an explosive belt, killing four people and wounding nine, members of the Issawi tribe said Sunday.

It was the second major bomb attack to strike American allies in Anbar Province in two days.

At the same time, American military officials in Baghdad reported Sunday that American and Iraqi forces killed 2,400 members of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia last year and captured 8,800 more.

The officials say the tally, which was impossible to independently verify, represents a majority of the Sunni Arab militants killed or captured in that period…

The numbers may provide some context to understand the size of the insurgent force the military continues to face. Estimates have varied over time…

A critical success the past year has been driving the group from some urban areas, especially around Baghdad, the officials said.

American military officials also said Sunday that a sharp rise this month in attacks using armor-piercing bombs from Iran proved short-lived…

After the teen suicide attack, a victim’s brother, himself slightly wounded, picked up the blood-stained keffiyeh that his brother had been wearing and wrapped it around his own head, declaring:

"I will never remove this until I avenge my brother. I hope God gives me life for 10 more days to take my revenge."

A “hopeful” reminder from our ally friends? We’ll be seeing this “brother” in the jihad death statistics next week, perhaps.
