The Associated Press reported Sunday, Jan. 13, on Islamic efforts to squelch chestnut gathering in forests south of Algiers, Algeria – the five wayward children were no match for jihadists armed with Kalashnikov rifles.
The killings took place outside Medea, which had been a haunt for insurgents in the 1990s. The attack raises concern that the violence that once plagued the region could be on the return.
Five youths gathering chestnuts Friday in the Layoune forest 10 kilometers (six miles) south of Medea, came under attack by Kalashnikov rifle fire, the ministry said.
Two children were killed on the spot and a third body was found Saturday, the statement said. Two other youths escaped.
The ages of the victims were not made available, nor was it known if they were boys or girls.
Soldiers backed by local communal guards, who are citizens armed by authorities, were searching the area for the attackers, the statement said.
In the 1990s, the Medea region was under the control of the Armed Islamic Group, which claimed responsibility for numerous village massacres and more brutality at the height of the insurgency.
Sweeps by security forces and infighting within Islamic jihad groups annihilated the movement.
The Salafist Group for Call and Combat…emerged and has affiliated itself with al-Qaeda’s network, changing its name to al-Qaeda in Islamic North Africa…This emergence of al-Qaeda adds new, dangerous dimensions to jihad in Algeria.
Islam is a diverse religion, with many intricacies – many opinions on how and when to kill, who must die, what level of bloodshed will most please their god of fortresses today. But children gathering chestnuts?
