Four killed by ‘separatists’ in India's northeast

Police officials tell French news of two attacks, four killed, by ‘separatists’ in India’s northeast

Agence France Press reports Tuesday, Jan. 15, of four killed and five injured in two separate attacks by “separatists” in India’s northeastern Assam state.

Militants of the outlawed separatist outfit Dima Haolam Daogah attacked a power facility about 180 miles south of Assam's main city of Guwahati, triggering a gun battle late Monday.

"Two paramilitary troopers and two civilians were killed in the encounter. The militants escaped," said a police official who did not wish to be named.

The Dima group is fighting for a separate homeland for the local Dimasa tribe.

In another incident, five people, including four paramilitary troopers, were injured Monday night in a powerful grenade blast -- the second in as many days in Assam.

Police blamed the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom, also fighting for an independent homeland, for both the grenade attacks.

Dozens of news references to these and other groups and their recent and past militancy in the area note their terrorist methodology, but fall short of noting political affiliations or if any are linked to Islamist jihad.
