The National Terror Alert Response Center reported Thursday, Feb. 14, on FBI and Homeland Security Department indications of Hezbollah groups in the U.S. targeting synagogues and other Jewish centers.
The warning follows threats of retaliation after a Hezbollah commander died of a car-bomb explosion in Damascus, Syria days ago.
The FBI ordered terrorism task forces nationwide to reach out to community sources for any information about stepped-up Hezbollah activity following the death of Imad Mughniyeh.
A law enforcement official says this kind of high-priority order is not often issued to joint terrorism task forces. The task forces are located in about 100 cities around the country.
Meanwhile, Israelis traveling abroad are warned of kidnapping dangers; the threat is rated as a high terror alert.
The Counter-Terrorism Bureau issued a severe travel advisory yesterday to all Israeli citizens traveling abroad because of grave concerns stemming from Hezbollah threats.
Reports indicated Hezbollah is likely to attempt terror attacks or kidnappings in retaliation for the assassination of senior military commander, Imad Mughniyah, in Damascus.
In parallel, the Israel Defense Forces have stepped up their levels of readiness in the Northern Command and the Air Force, fearing retaliatory action by Hezbollah along the northern border…
One of the central issues discussed was the pre-recorded address by Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah during Mughniyah’s funeral in Beirut yesterday.
Nasrallah vowed revenge and specified that Hezbollah would seek out Israeli targets abroad.
“Nasrallah’s statements were very clear. When there are such threats there is no need for intelligence,” a security source said yesterday.
This warning indicates a high probability
that Hezbollah would try to carry out attacks in the near future,
according to security sources.
In the medium future, the same sources believed that it was likely
that Hezbollah would attempt a showcase attack that would require a
great deal more planning and effort.
This scenario may reveal something of Hezbollah’s growing
organization in America – perhaps another warning of America’s need
to place domestic terror issues higher among our priorities.
