Gunman kills 5, self, in Illinois

At Northern Illinois University, Gunman kills 5, self, in Illinois, police begin investigation, withhold gunman’s identity

The National Terror Alert Response Center reported Thursday, Feb. 14, on a mass shooting at Northern Illinois University, gunning down 18, five victims are dead.

Drawing on news sources, NTARC noted authorities would not officially identify the shooter, but said he was dressed in black and fired from a lecture hall stage.

Campus Police Chief Donald Grady confirmed the deaths following a news conference. He says the gunman was not a student at the school and police had no apparent motive.

The university president says witnesses in the geology class saw someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun.

All classes were canceled Thursday night and the 25,000-student campus was closed on Friday.

A black-clad shotgun-wielding gunman opened fire in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall Thursday, wounding 18 people before killing himself, the school’s president said.

Four of the victims were confirmed in critical condition, and later reports indicated they died. Later, a fifth victim succumbed to wounds sustained.

School President John Peters said witnesses “say someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun.”

NIU Chief of Police Donald Grady said officials have identified the gunman, but his name is not being released.

It appears the gunman may have been a student somewhere else and acted alone, he said.

The university issued a statement on its Web site about an hour after the 3 p.m., shooting that “the immediate danger has passed. The gunman is no longer a threat.”

George Gaynor, a senior geography student, who was in Cole Hall when the shooting happened, told the student newspaper, the Northern Star, that the shooter was “a skinny white guy with a stocking cap on.”

He described the scene immediately following the incident as terrifying and chaotic.

The immediate danger is passed, and there is not much anyone can do against such reckless hatred of their fellow man.
