CAN Helps Deliver Mobile Homes

to Cancer Victims in Baton Rouge, LA

Christian Action Network helped deliver three mobile homes to Baton Rouge, LA in October 2005 to help cancer victims who were rendered homeless after Hurricane Katrina.

“Many cancer patients were not only sleeping on hard hospital floors so they can be near their treatment centers, but hundreds of others were sleeping in tents and foul and dirty shelters,” said CAN President, Martin Mawyer.

The plight of the cancer patients received little media attention and many patients were risking death because of their inability to get to treatment centers.

“We received an urgent call from Cancer Recover Foundation of America to help with the cost of transporting the mobile homes to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge,” said Mr. Mawyer.

“No sooner than we came to their aid,” Mr. Mawyer said, “Hurricane Rita hit the Gulf Port states.  It delayed the delivery of the mobile homes for a couple weeks, but by mid-October the homes were set up and occupied by several families of cancer patients.”

“Unfortunately, too many other families of cancer survivors were still left homeless.  It’s tragic,” Mr. Mawyer said, “but donations to help move more mobile homes fell off as many donors had helped so tremendously in other hurricane relief efforts.
